Multi-wavelength Laboratories in the Epoch of Reionization
SofĂa Rojas, Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy,

The formation and evolution of galaxies and their environments in the early universe are one of the main puzzles in modern cosmology. Observational studies have shown us that the universe is capable of forming massive galaxies and supermassive black holes very fast just within its first billion years. These objects play an important role in ionizing the universe and are key to understanding the assembly of the first galaxies. This is challenging to investigate in detail given the observational limitations to identify these distant sources and then inspect their chemical composition. During this talk, I will show different snapshots of the first Gyr of the universe that I have investigated with a wide variety of methods using ground and space-based telescopes. The multiwavelength studies on the first massive galaxies and quasars I have developed are crucial for the emerging golden era of space exploration. Lastly, I will show the follow-up studies I will be leading with the JWST and ALMA to characterize the first massive galaxies born deep into reionization at redshift z > 7, and their environments from parsec to mega-parsec scales.
