This is my friend Brian. He was a grad student here. He got his PhD in 1987. He died of AIDS in 1992. He was my role model for asking questions in seminars. Once we were drinking champagne and listening to the Pogues, and he told me I'd never understand my Irish heritage until I'd been to the docks in Liverpool to watch the Irish come "over the water" looking for work. Brian was gay and enjoyed Caltech gay activism.

This is my dog Tara at the age of nine months. She died on August 19, 1995 in Telluride, Colorado at the age of seven years.
